The Liberation Route follows the route of the allied forces during the liberation of Europe. The region of Arnhem-Nijmegen played a major part on the world's stage during World War II. In September 1944, during Operation Market Garden, one of the largest aerial landing operations in history took place here. The operation was only partially successful; the allied forces did not manage to keep Arnhem, but Nijmegen was liberated. A few months later, in February 1945, Operation Veritable was started from this area, which heralded the beginning of the great Rhineland offensive. Finally, the area was liberated.
The Liberation Route lets you experience the events taking place around Arnhem and Nijmegen in 1944 and 1945. At 23 locations in this vast area, there are marked field boulders, 'listening spots', where you can listen to the impressive events, from one or more people during the period 1944-1945. You can listen to the stories of these spots by calling 0900 54 23 728 or download them for free from www.liberationroute.com.
You can also hire an MP3 player with the stories, from VVV NL Shop Arnhem, VVV NL Shop Nijmegen / Nijmeegs Uitburo and the Nationaal Bevrijdingsmuseum (National Liberation museum) 1944-1945.
